Now more than ever, cybersecurity skills continue to take precedence over most other IT skills. The demand for cybersecurity professionals consistently outpaces the supply of available candidates. In a post-COVID-19 world, the most in-demand IT skills will not only consist of top cybersecurity skills but will remain as the best tech jobs for the future.

COVID-19 and Cybersecurity

COVID-19 and cybersecurity were both critical landmarks of 2020. The 2020 Harvey Nash/KPMG CIO Survey of over 4,200 IT leaders discovered that 2 in 5 companies reported an increase of cybersecurity attacks. The increase came shortly after the major shift in remote work.

According to the survey, 35% of these organizations report cybersecurity professionals as high in demand. As a result, cybersecurity skills now top the list of the most in-demand IT skills globally for 2020.

  • Organizational Change Management
  • Enterprise Architecture
  • Technical Architecture
  • Advanced analytics

AI Uses for Cybersecurity

Of the 4,200 IT Leaders involved in this survey, 47% accelerated digital transformation. They also increased the adoption of emerging technologies. Furthermore, these technologies include artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, blockchain, and automation. In addition, the survey indicated that AI and machine learning technologies increased as well. Those implemented before and after the pandemic rose from 21% to 24% as of August 2020.

A study conducted in 2019 found the top leading uses of AI in cybersecurity skills. Moreover, they include network, data, and endpoint security. Network security was found to be the most common AI use case for cybersecurity. Furthermore, 75% of surveyed IT executives reported this use of AI.

Since the pandemic, endpoint security has become an urgent priority for organizations. As employees transition to work from home, endpoint security increases. The global cybersecurity market is currently worth $173B in 2020, growing to $270B by 2026. By then, researchers anticipate that 77% of cybersecurity spending will be for externally managed security services.

The War on Information

Cyberattacks have only increased in frequency and sophistication. Organizations have thus been forced to devote more and more resources to shore up their defenses. After all, they must protect an ever-increasing amount of valuable information potentially susceptible to attack. However, artificial intelligence will enable proactive cybersecurity by predicting and preventing threats. The most in-demand IT skills therefore include the ability to identify potential threats ahead of time. This could transform businesses across industries.
